At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
